This series is so amazing! My son does not really like to read, but he loves Guts and Glory. He said that it is like having a conversation... and he says he can tell Ben is so excited to tell the story. I love them just as much! It gets him to read and learn some history at the same time. I definately recommend!

My 10 year old son is not a fan of history books or non-fiction books in general. But he enjoys the Guts & Glory series. The authors do a nice job of using pop culture references to help young readers relate to the content.

Prefer the bright colors and layout of the VanDam over StreetWise. This type of map is always at hand when traveling. Had never seen this line of maps until I bought the product. Will look for their products in the future.

This map has no relevant information. If you are a tourist, you can get that kind of information from just anywhere... this map won't be able to guide you through Delhi. I can tell you that because I have frequented Delhi a lot. I was looking for more details.

The book "Interplanetary Robots: True Stories of Space Exploration" by Rod Pyle is a very good overview of the robotic interplanetary exploration missions undertaken by the Jet Propulsion Lab from the 1960s to present. I have extensively read of the manned space program, which is obviously a much more popular read, but this is the first overview book that I have read of exclusively the robotic missions.I enjoyed the many behind the scenes vignettes regarding the various exploratory missions - especially continuing to refer back to the first pictures that Mariner 4 took of Mars as the day that "classical Mars" (the alien-inhabited, water canal-filled Mars of Giovanni Schiaparelli, Edgar Rice Burrows, Jules Verne, and Percival Lowell) died. The book is divided up into alternating chapters about historical missions and flash forward chapters about planned or hoped for future missions.My knocks are somewhat minor, but noteworthy. I noted several editing omissions/errors which will hopefully be corrected in the final version of the book (I received an advance copy). Specifically the author mentions that Mariner 6 was much more powerful "than the Pioneers". I know that this meant the "previous" Pioneers, but seems somewhat laughable statement when compared to the later Pioneer 10 & 11 missions. Also the beginning of the book drags very badly as the author describes driving up to JPL as if he is entering the gates of Katmandu or something (you almost hear high, lilting music as he waxes rhapsodically). It gets very silly at points and when you add to this the author continuing to reference his then-future position with JPL in his "Center of the Universe" chapters, it is a very author-centric and jettisonable part of the book. I see what he's trying to do - introducing the NASA center that is responsible for deep space exploration and using the later chapters as a binder, but this level of "wonder" is not necessary.In addition, I didn't like the flash forward sections. For one, much of it is "crystal-balling" which I think is pointless in today's funding variability. For two, these parts of the book will not age well if these missions are either dismissed outright or passed up for more deserving missions. Thirdly, I felt that these sections chewed up space that could have been better filled with chapters on other major missions that were not included in the book such as Ulysses, Deep Impact, Stardust, and Genesis, not to mention the many important space telescopes that JPL managed such as Genesis, IRAS, and Kepler.Despite the drawbacks, Interplanetary Robots: True Stories of Space Exploration is a very readable book and I think it fills an under-appreciated, under-represented niche of the space exploration market. Even if I couldn't give it a 5-star review, because of parts of the book I didn't like, it doesn't mean I didn't like it. Finally, the $12 purchase price is certainly affordable for a 320 page book.

Good Book:-) Poorly Titled :-( Unmanned Planetary Exploration Especially from JPL ViewpointThis is largely not as I had expected from the title a book on robotic rovers and otherwise robotically-controlled robotic experimentation and exploration. While Challenger is briefly mentioned in passing more recent robotic exploration such as that of Insight in the past week is not described at all.With that said this book presents from the viewpoint of an expert Space journalist and JPL press officer a history of unmanned space exploration since the 1960's the stories and accomplishments are well told albeit from a non-technical point of viewAn interesting and understandable piece of the space narrative which in the popular press is often told solely from the viewpoint of manned exploration.

"Interplanetary Robots: True Stories of Space" by Rod Pyle is a fascinating take on the recent accomplishments, successes and failures in humankind's attempts to explore the Solar System and beyond using robotic equipment. The "stories" Pyle presents are generally chronological. However, he "brackets" them in between vignettes of waiting, as a reporter, at the JPL for the historic moment of the landing of the rover Curiosity on Mars. Although this book has numerous illustrations, in color and otherwise, it is not a large and unwieldy "Coffee Table Book". Rather, it is one that could easily be slipped in a purse, briefcase, or even a pocket to read a bit on a commute or lunch hour or while waiting in line somewhere. Each of the stories is short and informative, but written in a non-technical style that makes the information easily accessible. Although this book was actually at the bottom of my current review list, I chose to "bump it up" so I could discuss it with my Aerospace Engineer granddaughter, who happens to be visiting for the Thanksgiving Holiday. Upon her recommendation, I may also share it with my son-in-law who teaches middle school science. I have found this book both enlightening and extremely enjoyable to read.

I came across an awesome picture for the wall a year or two ago, with every single spacecraft ever sent mapped out in a timeline and a long graphic of our solar system and beyond. I love that. It's right in my hallway and the first thing I see when I come into my house.This book is the PERFECT companion piece to that. The history of all of these different attempts we've made at reaching various celestial bodies - there's so much more than I ever heard or read before.It starts out at the beginning, and I love that it doesn't shy away from the USA's initial blundering and incompetence. The photos, blueprints, and details flesh this out so wonderfully.I find that I start reading, and I've gone further than I intended to and spent way more time than I had planned each time I pick it up "for just a quick read."Excellent resource to have for any fan of our space program.

I was really hoping this would be something special in light of all the reviews but it disappointed. Like a few others here I found the plot more than a little obvious and the characters to be one dimensional. The dialogue is somewhat of a high school level which added to the awkwardness of the text. The travel and battle scenes were ok but the fighting narratives became very repetitive with little new to add. Overall it didnt grip me in the same way as Conn Iggulden or Adrian Goldworthy does so this book doesnt make it into the top league by any stretch. I wont be buying the second volume of the saga because he doesnt make me care enough about anyone in the first, nor is the writing so good that I have to buy it.

I was looking for historical fiction about the Norman Conquest and discovered James Aitcheson's series featuring the fictional knight Tancred a Dinant. These book are exactly what I was looking for - lots of adventure, careful recreation of the historical period and minimal explicit sexual content. Tancred is an interesting hero - arrogant, guilt ridden, impetuous and an intelligent leader. Aitcheson is an excellent writer whose prose flows easily making for very enjoyable reading. Most of my ancestry is French, English, Irish and Scottish and dates back to the Conquest. I'm leaving this week with my family for a visit to the British Isles to discover our "roots" and reading these books is an enjoyable and useful means of learning the early history of the countries.

It could have been better. The main character is OK, but development of any supporting characters is non-existent. Eudo and Wace were present throughout yet we know very little about them. As for women, Oswynn is only present as a memory and Beatrice is too ultra-sensitive for the reader to take a liking to her. It was a little bit of a chore to get through, definitely not a page -turner.

Wow! Great stuff....lots of action but also intrigue throughout the book with interesting characters and a strong base in history. I really enjoyed the languages used and some of the actual phrase in old English (Saxon?) were very interesting to see. Can't wait to read the author's next book.

This is an absorbing read that begins with quietly paced pages in which Tancred of Dinant's thoughts tell us time, place and circumstance. While the first sentence is not "It was a dark and stormy night," it's raining. (Easy to joke "Of course it's raining, it's England," but O, to be in England on its glorious sunny days.) Tancred, who fought at Hastings, is leading his contingent of armed men into still-resistant Northumbria. Soon enough, we're in battle and on to Tancred's page-cramming further adventures.The author's bona fides are impressive. At Cambridge he was a student of Dr. Elisabeth van Houts, who gave him a glowing jacket blurb in which she says he is "as true to the sources as possible." Prodigious scholar of the period, editor and translator of The Gesta Normannorum Ducum of William of Jumièges, Orderic Vitalis, and Robert of Torigni, along with her immense body of other scholarly work, she should know.All that said, what matters most to the reader is: can I put this book down? I say no, as a matter of fact I couldn't, and I'll be reading Aitcheson's next.

His "Surely You're Joking, Mr. Feynman!” is an exceptional book: definitely 5++. The sequel, “What do you care what other people think?”, is perhaps not quite as good, being somewhat disjointed, but it is clearly still a solid 5 stars. A fascinating read.

His well-known Nobel-prize winning work and iconoclastic behavior proves the point: follow your own thinking. This compilation presents some funny, serious, sad and inspiring stories about Feynman, told by Feynman. From his romance with his high school sweetheart and first wife, to his trials and tribulations on the Challenger Commission, Feynman pushes against the system to get to the truth. I wish I had known him.

I love this book. Hilarious writing from one of my intellectual heroes and a rare, true genius. I first read this book in the early 90's, but bought it recently for my son as a Christmas gift since he liked "Surely You're Joking, Mr. Feynman" so much. Such a character and an inspiration to wring as much out of life as possible.

Just absolutely wonderful - another collection of anecdotes from Feynman's life. The first part of the book almost seems indistinguishable from 'Surely You're...', using the same style of narration to present details of incidents. These 'incidents' are often unconnected and span from childhood recollections from Feynman's life and his original encounter with Arlene (his wife) to the time he spent during a trip to Brazil. Each story is amusing whilst managing to provide a deeper glimpse into the erratic, comical yet intelligent character of Feynman.The second and greater part of this book deals with Feynman's presence on the committee investigating the 1986 crash of the Space Shuttle Challenger, capturing the incredible dissatisfaction felt by him as he is plunged into the administrative bureaucracy of Washington and NASA. The descriptions of the shuttle and its faulty components are illustrated clearly with the help of figures and photographs. These illustrations help the reader visualize the circumstances of the crash and where the the major fault within the shuttle actually lay. These are particularly helpful in eliminating any ambiguity in the description of technical rocket components (O-rings, etc). Despite the serious content, this part of the book retains the strong elements of humor found within rest of the book. It manages to paint a ludicrous picture of the way things tended to be handled in NASA (e.g. NASA informing an official that the probability of failure of an manned rocket is 1 in 100,000 which implied that "you could fly the shuttle every day for an average of 300 years between accidents- every day, one flight, for 300 years- which is obviously crazy!"). He also points towards the general errors made by large organizations such as NASA due to the divide between levels of management by narrating personal conversations with the management, engineers and workers. The perspicuous manner with which he describes his involvement in the investigation almost makes the reader feel as if he were right alongside Feynman while he was dealt the task of investigating the crash.I would strongly recommend this book to anyone who enjoyed "Surely You're Joking..." and is willing to put his mind to a bit more work to enjoy the second part of the book. Overall, it is a great book that any Feynman fan will be willing to appreciate!

[At one point he exclaims that the Challenger hearings are 'killing me'... speeding his death.] His further descriptions of his life with his first wife are also a wonderful and very human essay.Feynman, with one exception, is the prime model of how a human being should approach life in its amazing totality. The ideas in this book are as much a part of that model as "Surely" and his "Introduction to Physics."The title, by the way, was taken from words his first wife spoke about sixty years ago. Feynman had been placed in a situation where his presentation of himself - not his ideas - was of critical importance. His first wife, using those words, made it possible for him to ignore the presentation and pursue the ideas.This book is about love of life, as are all his books.

I thoroughly enjoyed this comic. It’s a great collection to all the RAAM comics prior. It also features detailed artwork that is aesthetically pleasing. The lore is great and a must-buy for Gears Veterans and fans alike. It features Karn (GOW Judgement), Skorge (GOW2) and of course RAAM.More importantly, this comic paints an image both literally and figuratively of the infrastructure and hierarchy behind the Locust Horde. It’s actuallt quite interesting to have seen some of the perspective and philosophy behind the Locust soldiers, generals, and elders.I just wish I could have more, but that’s always a great problem to have.

Comic Book is great. I can’t say the same for the DLC included. I was expecting at least 1 Comicbook skin via a Lancer or Gnasher, but nope, got them on all the other weapons but those two. I like Vold Raam but would’ve preferred Uzil Sraak.

Awesome comics honestly! They really explained what's been going on with the lambent and what those things are. It explains how Raam became in power. It explains a lot!

It is amazing to have the gears comics return and I liked this one. The art is great and the story expansion is a fantastic addition. If you want to know how RAAM actually got to be a leader, now you know.
