About the Author
Bryan Shih is a photojournalist based in New York. A former contributor to the Financial Times and National Public Radio in Japan, he is a graduate of the University of California-Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism and a former Fulbright scholar. His work on the Panthers has garnered him one of the highest rankings among entries in the LensCulture 2015 Portrait Awards competition, and has led to his selection for the New York Times inaugural portfolio review. Yohuru Williams is a historian and Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Fairfield University. He is the author and or editor of several books on the Black Panther party, including Black Politics/White Power: Civil Rights Black Power and Black Panthers in New Haven (Blackwell, 2006), In Search of the Black Panther Party, New Perspectives on a Revolutionary Movement (Duke, 2006), and Liberated Territory: Toward a Local History of the Black Panther Party (Duke, 2008). He has appeared on Al Jazeera America, Ebru TV, Fox Business, C-SPAN, and NPR.

In the interest of full disclosure, I do know Yohuru Williams personally.If you think we're re living the civil rights era, you're not the only one. If feels like the country is re fighting some of the same problems that were fought in the 1950s and 1960s. What better way to prepare to join the battle than by studying what people did the last time this happened?This is not the complete history of a movement, but it will tell you about the Black Panthers from the perspective of the membership. The book is structured as an oral history. Past members tell the story of why they joined the Panthers, what they did as members, and a bit on what they took with them. No one book can tell the whole story of the Panthers, but this one comes pretty close. There is an assumption made that the reader knows some of the basic history of the Black Panthers, and if this is your introduction to the Panthers, there will be events and people referenced that the reader won't know. However, this doesn't detract from the flow of the story and it's still worth reading. Yohuru Williams, you did good work.To me, the value of this book is learning what people did in the past when society was crazy. It's an entertaining, educational, and uplifting book. Buy it, you won't regret it.
It's a great book that humanizes individuals in a movement that has (and had) a terribly negative reputation. I've taken to leaving it on my coffee table and choosing an entry to read at random while sitting on my couch with my morning caffeine. At the very least, it's a great way to keep unwelcome relatives out of the house.

Beautiful photos and stories that give an inspiring back drop to an amazing time. So interesting to read the stories from the foot soldiers of the Black Panthers. I highly recommend this book.
