A good addition to have on hand for ideas. It is user friendly and it is a book that you will use time and again!
This is really a great book with hundreds of patterns. The organization is set up to be easy for beginners. The book started with great picture tutorials showing how to make each stitch then has small thumbnails of each patter in the book. Then each chapter in the book builds off the other. So chapter one the only thing you need to know it single crochet and chain stitch and so on. There is a photo a graph and written directions for each patter. The only real downside if that the thumbnails are too small. They are the size of a quarter which makes it difficult to really get an idea of what the pattern looks like unless you go to the page and look at it. Thus I find the thumbnail section virtually useless. Slightly larger thumbnails would make this section easier to browse.
This is the best written, and most informative crochet book I've encountered yet. Fantastic. I've seen some complaints on here about the size of the thumbnail pictures in the pictorial index...disregard those complaints. Each stitch instruction comes with a larger photo, diagram,written instructions, and in a yarn color that's easy to see tue work. This book also includes detailed instructions on basic stitches, with pictures AND international crochet symbols with all of their names and abbreviations. This book is a must have.
I've had this book on my wish list forever, so I was really excited when I could afford to order it. I received it a couple of days ago and, while it has lots of crochet stitch pictures and instructions, they're mostly of the lacy variety. There are a few (very few) of what I call "fabric" stitches--stitches that are variations of single, double and treble crochet that make a dense pattern. This was my first disappointment. My second disappointment was the book doesn't list the names for the various stitches. Part of what I love about the needle arts is the history and the names for stitches that have been in use for decades. For instance, Crow's Foot Lattice, Arcade, Moss, Crunch, Bow Tie. I don't understand how the author could do all of the research that went into the book without making note of the name of the stitch. I know she didn't invent these stitches and it wouldn't have been difficult to note the name of the stitch. I'm an intermediate to expert crocheter, and will use some of the patterns in the book. I'll just keep looking for a stitch encyclopedia that includes the names of the stitches.
Others have complained about the pictures and no names for the stitch patterns. While this is true and the names bother me, I've got to say this is the most complete set of stitch patterns I've ever seen! The charts are a great addition, and the instructions are good. I am so happy I went ahead and bought this book. Right now I'm going through the applicable stitches (ones with a foundation repeat of 10 or less) and making swatches. I've made them in cotton yarn so they can be used for dish clothes. :) There are several stitches in this book that I've not seen elsewhere. Does this help with my crochet designing? You bet!Would I buy this again? In a heart beat! Maybe someday this author will come out with a "complete" book of edgings. :)
This book has been on my wish list for some time now and I am very pleased with my purchase. First, it arrived a day early and I was like a child at Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory (the version with Gene Wilder). I leafed through the book as soon as it arrived. There is a Table of Contents (TOC) after the Copyright information. Immediately following that there is a review of crochet's basic stitches with each stitch in easily understood step by step instructions with images to go along with the written instructions.After the above segment there is a handy reference for each of the stitch patterns in picture format. In addition to the image of the crocheted swatch there is a corresponding a diagram image and then step-by-step directions on how to crochet that pattern. There are 33 chapters and 500 stitch patterns.It is going to be an easy, quick reference for me. This book is great for those that are new to crochet along with experienced crocheter like myself. I have been crocheting since I was taught at about seven years old by my mother. That was about 50 years ago. I love reference books. I would recommend this reference book for any crochet skill set.
