My toddler likes Richard Scarry books and loves fire trucks and fire stations right now - so I thought this book would be an automatic win. Sadly, this book is not about a fire station. It's more about a pair of painters: they show up to paint the fire station and run into all sorts of problems and create big messes along the way. There is not much in the book about what actually goes on at a fire station or what firemen do. It's a fine story plot, but if you are looking to buy a book about fire stations for your fire truck loving toddler, skip this one.
I bought this as a Christmas present for my nephew and he loves it. I remembered growing up reading "Busy Town" and this was a beautiful trip down memory lane for me as well. The artwork is fantastic, the story is the right amount of silly for kids, and characters are beautifully creative. A great classic!
I doubt Richard Scarry wrote this terrible book. The illustrations aren't up to his usual excellent standard and the story is awful. In an effort to make this book as short and cheap as possible they left out crucial details that help the child understand what on earth is happening. Terrible Terrible Terrible.
We LOVE Richard Scarry. However, this is not by Richard Scarry, but the Richard Scarry Corporation. Extremely disappointing book. No charm at all.
My 2 year old son is on a very big Firefighter kick right now so I purchased several different Firefighting books and this is easily his least favorite (and personally I would have to agree). My husband grew up on Richard Scary which is why I bought it in the first place but if I could do it over - I wouldn't.It seems like the story goes like this - everything gets SUPER messy then it gets fixed, then another HUGE mess happens and that gets fixed and then yet ANOTHER massive mishap/mess happens, etc. Seems a bit excessive to me and the art is a bit A.D.D. - everything everywhere!! WAY too much going on - every page is covered!! Maybe some people like that?Personally I recommend "Curious George and the Firefighters" and "Big Frank's Fire Truck" these were 2 of the other books I bought at the same time and my son LOVES them!! George ranks #1 but Big Frank is a very close 2nd!
We have several Richard Scarry books and this one doesn't compare. I love Richard Scarry books for the illustrations, there is always so much to talk about with my toddler, but these illustrations are overstimulating. My sons loves fire trucks and Richard Scarry books (and just books in general) but this book doesn't hold his attention. Wouldn't recommend this book.
Who could say 'no' to Richard Scarry? Not me or the grandkids, especially the 5.5 yr old. I started him off at 2 & neither one of us can get enough. We not only enjoy the story, but also finding Lowly Work & the little mouse. Sometimes, they are funnier than the book! Recommend.
Such a cute book. Our nephew loves fire trucks and he loves this book. There are a lot of things to look at and talk about and it's a great way to build vocabulary and help with recognition.
