I bought this on the recommendation of a friend and I wasn't disappointed. Plenty of good information on basic geology and fantastic identification pictures of everything from common rocks to beautiful examples of crystals and gems. I found myself using it to identify every pebble and rock in my still life objects box accurately, which helps a lot in titling still lifes paintings.Good field guide for a layman. Explains the scientific terminology well and doesn't presume you're already familiar with it. Not a pocket guide but wonderful once you come home with small pebbles and digital pictures of boulders, explains everything.

Wow, within 2 months I was able to quit my job because of this book! I not only found enough rocks and minerals to support me but I now run three quarries! Just kidding. This book is a cool guide to use in identifying rocks. Good pictures and descriptions too!

I didn't expect much out of this book but has a lot of good material that both children and adults
I was able to create my whole lab around the samples found in these books. I bought 30 of these so each student could have a copy. It's easy to use (charts for rocks and for minerals), and the kids were able to navigate through the more difficult parts with ease.
This book contains more than I expected in language that I can understand. Would recommend for pre-geology course work and amateur familiarity with rocks and gems.
