A few years ago, I heard Thabiti Anyabwile preach at Together for the Gospel in Louisville. I remember being impressed with his pastoral heart, theologically precise mind, and his feet that were obviously set on obeying and glorifying God. His newest book confirms my first impressions at T4G.Finding Faithful Elders and Deacons reads like cliff notes for men who either aspire to serve, or are currently serve in either office. And "cliff notes" is not a criticism; rather it is written in the most positive vein. This does not suggest watered-down content or "weak tea." Rather, it affirms the qualifications and responsibilities that emerge in Scripture for faithful elders and deacons. It reminds me of Biblical Eldership by Alexander Strauch - but tends to be less technical. While Anyabwile's treatment is theologically and exegetically accurate, it veers away from some of the more technical language and arguments that appear in Strauch.The book is arranged in three parts. Part one and part two survey deacon and elder qualifications - in short how to find faithful leaders for the household of God. Part three summarizes the job description of pastors: Elders Refute Error Elders Avoid Myths and Train for Godliness Elders Hope in God Elders Command Elders Let No One Despise Their Youth Elders Set an Example Elders Teach Elders Grow Elders Watch Their Life Elders Watch Their DoctrineFinding Faithful Elders and Deacons is a welcome and needed reminder for churches who are set on living, leading, and shepherding to the glory of God. Thabiti Anyabwile wrote Finding Faithful Elders and Deacons as a concise and practical tool to equip church leaders for the task of searching out men called and ready to take on the mantle of serving and shepherding the body. The book functions both as a practical guide and as a brief overview of Paul's instructions to Timothy regarding requirements for appointing elders and deacons from 1 Timothy 3-4. As a guide, Anyabwile keeps the chapters short and meditates briefly on each specific requirement for church leadership. Broken into three sections, the mass of the book focuses on finding men who meet the biblical requirements for eldership as the final section gives good reminders to pastors about what their role looks like biblically and practically. After brief mediations on the scriptures, Anyabwile closes each chapter with a question and answer format to help the reader think through the initial devotional thoughts. In Anyabwile's discussions on deacons, he frequently uses the "table waiter" paradigm in accord with Acts 6:2 to hammer home the point of the service nature of the office of deacon. Through the use of stories often exhibiting the hard and humble work of serving tables at restaurants, the author effectively conveys to his readers the seriousness of the call to be a deacon. While it could be easy to quickly gloss over Paul's requirements for elders and deacons when reading them, Anyabwile's deliberate attention to every word in 1 Timothy 3-4 causes his readers to take time to ponder what Paul meant with each requirement.The methodical and deliberate nature of the book is one of its great strengths. Anyabwile's meditations on the sincerity of deacons is a great example of how pausing on every seemingly minute requirement from scripture gives fresh insight to the reader. Modern language may cause readers to miss everything Paul is trying to say when it is stated that deacons must be sincere. Anyabwile helps the reader to understand that sincerity is more than empathy or good will. Sincerity is resolute honesty and wisdom filled transparency. This same benefit works its way through most of Anyabwile's chapters and guides the reader to understand church leadership is a truly noble task in the spirit of 1 Timothy 3:1. Furthermore, as Anyabwile states, elders are necessarily "men who inspire uprightness in others."In keeping with the high calling of church leadership, Anyabwile does well in giving equal credence to all of the requirements. One does not get the impression that Anyabwile finds any requirement to be more important than any other requirement; rather they are all of great importance and yet none of the requirements carries much weight unless the leader is a man grounded in scripture.The concise nature of the book is both its strength and its weakness. Since the chapters are short, they are not burdensome and thus the work can easily be consulted and used. On the other hand, there are a few issues where the discussion is just too brief to be satisfying. Of particular note, the brevity of Anyabwile's discussion on elders being "one woman men" leaves much to be desired. On an issue such as divorce, the book may be too brief to broach such a contentious issue. A similar point may be said of Anyabwile's instructions for elders and deacons to refute error while speaking the truth in love. Speaking the truth in love is easily said, but how is it done? The book's brevity makes such a precarious requirement difficult to expound upon.As a whole, Anyabwile successfully accomplishes his stated intent of providing a work that opens a simple conversation about church leadership. The book is practical, theological, and pedagogical. There is nothing new or groundbreaking about the book, simply it serves a purpose in its avoidance of being exhaustive.

This book lives up to what I have come to expect from 9 Marks, which is solid, biblical wisdom and advice for church government. I bought the book after the latest ordination of new elders in my local church body because I had some reservations about some of the men and wanted to know if my reservations were merely my own opinions and convictions, or if they were based on Scripture. This book has answered my questions and more. I honestly wish I had found it and read it a year ago.I was also looking for guidance on how to conduct an elder nomination process. I'd like to know what how other churches conduct this process and how scripture influences it. This is where the book failed to give me answers I was looking for. There is nothing within its cover that addresses this process. It has plenty to offer about what to look for and the biblical requirements, but nothing about the actual process of choosing and electing elders and deacons. This is the only area I would humbly suggest for improvement upon this excellent resource.

Very helpful for a new elder in a new church.

This book was a great refresher on the qualifications and qualities required of deacons and elders. It would be a great resource for any baptistic pastor to have on hand!Each chapters questions and observations made sure that the issue(s) addressed in the chapter did not stay in the land of theory, but made its appearance in the everyday nitty gritty of church ministry.
