I own both this guide book and DK's shorter and smaller "Top 10 Tokyo." This is 208 pages, "Top 10" is 144. This is 8.6 x 5.1 x 0.8 inches, "Top 10" is 7.4 X 3.9 x 0.5 inches. This weighs 14.1 ounces, "Top 10" weighs 7.8 ounces. The surprising thing is that the "Top 10" version seems to have *more* information, and that information is MUCH better organized. Granted, there are longer entries in the larger, heavier version on some of the specific museums. But the smaller, lighter version seems to list more stuff overall and in terms of finding out about the best gardens to go do, the best museums to go to, etc., the "Top 10" version is simply much more useful. And it is smaller and lighter. So I recommend buying it instead. It's a great guide to Tokyo.
Directions to sight were not always clear and I often had to resort to additional maps or other sources to find things. Some information was out of date. For instance, there was a recommendation for visiting the National Children's Castle in Shibuya, but that Castle is permanently closed. The included subway map did not make it clear that there are at least two train lines in Tokyo that service commuters and people moving around the city. One is an above-ground line and the other is a subway. These lines do not necessarily overlap, so you might have to leave one line to get on the next. That wasn't made clear in this book.
This travel guide is well organized and easy to locate exactly what you are seeking with a detailed table of contents and a thorough index section. The maps included are plastic laminated and easy to reference, and you can tell this guide was designed to travel along with you as it is very durably bound. Special flaps on both the back and the front covers function as place holders so you can reference more than one section while using it. It also has just enough descriptive information without being overly wordy and difficult to read on the fly. Plus, the recommendations for attractions, restaurants, lodging, and transportation were all spot-on with my experience and provided a lot of insight. I really benefitted from planning my trip using this guide! HOWEVER, if you are seeking information about Tokyo Disney Land you will not find any information about it in this guide (not that that is a significant detractor, but something to be aware of). It is, nonetheless, and excellent resource in negotiating the fantastic country of Japan.
I usually like DK guide books but this one is a MESS. It is a disorganized jumble of too much information. The book organizes the city in areas with individual chapters, within the chapters there is a very small map with numbers and from there page by page references that become a hot mess of information, you have to keep on flipping back to try to find the location on the tiny map, and because of the quantity of the suggested sights to see and the very vague information (from temples to shopping) it is left to the user to try to decipher what might be of quality. By that I mean: be ready to have a better guide book next to you or access to the internet to find more information and specifics to make decisions. The book is also full of mistakes: for ex. the main paragraph on Tsukiji Fish Market locates it on the Map at 5C4, but it brings you completely to the wrong place, only by going to the index does it give the correct information at K9.The suggested itineraries if you have 2 or 4 days in Tokyo partially cover attractions that are not considered vital and it leaves me wondering what the people behind this book were thinking.I wish I could return it but I started writing in it.I am very disappointed.
This book seemed really light on content. Additionally, basically all of this was duplicated in the DK Japan book, so there's no need to buy both. Lots of general information about traveling to Japan but not enough about Tokyo specifically. The info on the guided walks is outdated. The author claims the Odaiba walk is 1 mile and 90 minutes, but it took us over 3 hours, and it was WAY more than 1 mile! The distance between Big Sight and the Aomi train station is almost 1 mile itself! (We took the train instead of walking.) The Daiba Little Hong Kong inside the mall has been replaced with a Madame Tussaud's. The information on Akihabara and Ikebukuro (the two big anime districts) was outdated as well. I was irritated that they didn't even mention the original Animate shop in Ikebukuro. The maps were not very useful either - it only included subway lines and not the JR. Are you really gonna get around Tokyo without using the Yamanote line at least once?
First off it's a DK book so the pictures and graphics are why one would purchase this book. However outside of that there is surprisingly little content to the entire book. The biggest complaint is it treats almost every site the same, e.g the editors casually mention a must see in the same paragraph as really mundane sites without discerning between the two. The restaurant listings are poor - outdated and just not good choices. Part of this I blame on the editors and part on the city itself. There are tens of thousands of restaurants in Tokyo and many locals don't know the area immediately outside their small living areas. It really feels like someone spent a week in Tokyo and decided to try to write a guidebook.
First time going to Tokyo. This book was super handy. The map of the city was useful for big land marks and was great that you could take it out of the book. The subway map was also really handy to be able to take out of the book and carry around. The extra info in the back about costs and wait times for things was also a big help.
