This is a story that captured me immediately. The character of Vivian won my heart with her willingness to reach her dreams, no matter what, yet she had not lost her concern for people. She saw herself as cold hearted, but was not. McKenna is our dark hero, holding back his emotions, requiring dominance and causing pain to rid himself of the demons he has. He sees himself as unworthy of love, because of an unknown event in his past. Vivian’s sweetness begins to open his heart, but he is unwilling to share his past with her, which leads to pain for both of them. This book is certainly a cliffhanger. It sets up the story and makes you long for the rest. I hope she writes fast!
I am voluntarily reviewing a copy of this book that I received for free.In the first installment of Shades of Love we meet Vivian, a struggling student, and McKenna, a man with secrets that haunt him. Dark McKenna continues Shayne Ford's fantabulous style of characters with dark history and relationship suspense. Looking forward to the rest.
I love this Author’s stories of dark, twisted, beautiful love and characters. This is another great start to what I’m sure will be another fabulous series. So emotional, heart wrenching and sexy. I love the H/h and their connection. So good! I voluntarily reviewed an ARC.
This book reminded me of Fifty Shades, but with an edgier, broody, more realistic man. McKenna was off the charts hot, his hidden secrets just adding to his magnetism. I cannot wait for the next book to this cliffhanger!
What a good book. I couldn’t put it down. Ready for the next chapter I just know that more ups and downs are to come. Good job
Oh my gosh. Sometimes you just wish you could reward a book with more than 5 stars! This is an amazing start to another of Shayne's trilogies. While reading it I thought of the movie, Pretty Woman with a big hunk of darkness thrown in. Vivian, so sweet, but, takes to the streets to support herself. McKenna to her rescue. She needs him, but he is so dark and unreadable. Does he really care about her, about anything? Mystery, intrigue, danger, sizzling hot sex. Awesome characters, awesome writing, awesome story. I need book 2 and 3 NOW.
Vivian and McKenna, two broken people leading double lives. Vivian is an 18 year old college student who works part time as a barista. Yet, without any other means of support, and an intense desire to get a college degree, she has begun to further supplement her income the only other way she can, prostitution. She moved to NYC from Seattle to get far away from a much older man, who she gave herself to, in order to help her mother out after her mother lost her job. But then, at 38, her mother died of a heart attack. Although she had tried to get away from that man, even a protective order was not successfully keeping him from stalking her, so she moved. Although loved by her single mother, she has seen the results of love and lack of education and does not want her history to repeat her mother's.McKenna started out as a john, who looked like a mountain and acted emotionless. But after showing Vivian some concern and then saving her twice from potential assaults, he began to become much more. She knew him to be a highly successful underground fight club fighter, until she unexpectedly saw another totally different side of him, three months after he had claimed to have left the country. He is totally withdrawn and rarely exposes himself or his emotions to anyone, although he has told Vivian that she knows the real person better than anyone else. But it's quite clear there is much more to McKenna's history than Vivian has been told.This is the first book of a trilogy and, as such, it is setting the stage for the next two books extremely well. As dark romances go, this one has been reasonably mild so far. The details of both Vivian and McKenna's current and former lives are being provided in small portions, as circumstances require, giving us greater insight into what has shaped each to become who they are and why they act and feel as they do. It's like opening an artichoke, you have to peel off a lot of leaves before you reach the heart. And, this far, I'm truly enjoying getting there.
The blurb adequately describes the story. Vivian is a college freshman, struggling to get by. She moved to New York from Seattle to escape an abusive man that did pro bono legal work for her now deceased mother, in exchange for her virginity and much more. Now in college, she is forced to occasionally prostitute herself for money to eat, and that is how she meets the mysterious Chad McKenna. Their affair is steamy and tumultuous. Both are trying to escape things is their pasts. I'm looking forward to reading the next book. The writing is very descriptive; I just wish the proofreading was better.
