I thought this was absolutely wonderful--a great read. I read it in one sitting. The author delivered all the elements: a riveting plot that covered Paris at such a pivotal time, and provided a detailed look at the city's troubles as well as the adventures and interactions of an absolutely wonderful cast of characters. Haven't had this much enjoyment from a book in some time. Would love to read more from this author with these characters. A series of books with these people would be great!!
If you're looking for a definitive, extensive book on haute couture, this is not it. But if you're looking for a pleasant read about Paris after the German occupation, and a behind the scenes look at Christian Dior, dive in. It's a quick read with some engaging characters and a glimpse of what life was like in Paris after the war. I completely enjoyed it.
I love historical fiction, particularly novels that take place during WWII and this one intrigued me as I was looking through the Kindle First selections for this month. I also studied French in high school and college so that added to my interest and I figured I would take a chance on The Designer by Marius Gabriel. The Designer is the story of the beginning of modern-day French fashion and what many of us have seen in department stores, runway shows, and magazine advertisements. Oona Reilly (aka Copper) is an American who has arrived in Paris towards the end of WWII. She is recently married but not exactly happy in her marriage. She is interested in journalism and always has her camera with her, ready to photograph anything intriguing. Copper finds a friend in Christian Dior and the two become instrumental in each other's lives, providing friendship, advice, and comfort. Because Copper is a fresh-faced American woman, she is intriguing to many and soon finds herself the object of affection for two very different people, both of whom she adores. She will have to decide which person is best suited for her and the life she wants to live. Most of the time when I read historical fiction novels, they often take place in Germany and are told from the perspective of Nazis or Jewish people. I liked how this one was written from the viewpoint of an American living in Paris. We get to see how some of the Parisians are treated during and after the war through her eyes, which provides an outsider's perspective of the events that happened. There are also a number of fashion designers mentioned in the novel who are still around today. Anyone who has picked up a fashion magazine has likely heard of names such as Dior and Balenciaga so that part was fun for me to read! This novel was mostly enjoyable for me although some parts of it weren't as interesting. There are a few swear words in this novel but nothing too over-the-top for anyone who likes to know about that beforehand. There were also a number of descriptive sexual scenes in this novel, involving people of the opposite sex and the same sex.Overall, I liked this novel and I'm glad I chose it since none of the other Kindle First selections appealed to me. I enjoy novels set around WWII and love anything to do with France so this one was a good selection for me. I also enjoyed the parts with the designers and it was fun to hear some of the names and how modern-day fashion may have started. If you enjoy historical fiction, this is a good option!
I was restless and could not sleep. So finding myself on Amazon at 1 am in the morning...i saw this. Quickly read the editorial review and though why not?? 4 hours later and half a bag of chips gone. The story was a truly interesting take on historical figures. Marius Gabriel has a vivid imagination. A great story indeed. I think Marius Gabriel could pick any historical figure write a story that anyone would not even question; that's how great this one was. Thanks although your book kept me up ( wink & a nod)
Its well-written, very interesting historical fiction and provides different perspectives on wartime and postwar France: how the fashion industry survived Nazi occupation, details about bohemian life, the Resistance, revolts, etc. I found it hard to put down, and the authors note at the end filled in last chapters of the fascinating history of Christian Dior. Highly recommend.
An intriguing story ... I enjoyed the part about the world of fashion, particularly Christian Dior. Perhaps I didn't read the reviews carefully enough for clues, because I was unsettled by the salacious detail about the sordid underbelly of post-war Paris life. I skimmed over the grim stories of what went on in concentration camps. I would not have chosen the book if I had been warned of scenes such as the abused porn model injecting herself with cocaine, between her toes. Not the kind of escape I was looking for! The main character couldn't decide if she was attracted to men or women. Mr. Gabriel is successful, so he must know his audience. It isn't me.
Ok book about a classic time in history. Didn't expect it to hinge so much on sexual escapades. I was looking for a story of the history of Dior. Not some characters sex life.
The Title of the book is misleading as the story is, for the most part, about a young woman in Paris and her luck to be talented in writing about post war Paris 1945-1947. There are a lot of famous names dropped that she bumps into and a lot of excessiveness of sex, drugs, drinking, wild parties and horrors of humanity of the time. Christian Dior is part of the mix, but I hoped that it would be more about the world of fashion design, the work behind the scenes, the people who worked in the houses, what they did to make it all happen. This was touched on, but mostly generally and at the end of the book.
