I don't pick up historical romances as often as I should even though I enjoy reading them a great deal. I've read contemporary M/M romances before but The Soldier's Scoundrel is the first M/M Regency and this is a début novel by the author.Jack Turner has a knack of making his own fortune. A good attribute because his abusive upbringing taught him to seize any opportunity at any time. He's like a chameleon, blending into any situation to 'help' solve problems for his discerning clients. When a distinguished young gentleman seeks him out at his office, he says, he's making inquiries for his sister. Whilst that may be true, it is obvious to Jack that Captain 'Oliver' Rivington isn't the gentleman he pretends to be.Oliver Rivington is back in England after selling the military commission his father paid for when he was only seventeen years old. Now in London, he's trying to find a purpose in his life and looking into the affairs of his sister is a start. When he visits an office to query an account, he comes face to face with a man who is far more complex than the services he offers.I didn't know what to expect when I dived in, but my inability to put this book down became quickly apparent; a hugely positive sign. I love the fact the protagonists' attraction is taboo with the obstacles they have to overcome to be together. A welcome surprise was the mystery element to the plot as Jack, with Oliver's assistance turn detectives. The whole plot is fun and aided with an entertaining cast of secondary characters. When I read the ending I felt that the author's expectations didn't match the feelings of the time (Regency) with regards to homosexuality...then I reminded myself that this is a fictional story of two men falling in love and there's absolutely nothing wrong with wishing them a happy ending.The writing flows in this sexy tale of forbidden love. Both protagonists compliment each other perfectly despite their vastly differing social backgrounds. Despite his background, Jack is compassionate and incredibly perceptive whilst Oliver is romantic; believing they can find a way to be together permanently.This is a wonderful first novel by Cat Sebastian and I can't wait to read more from her.***arc generously received courtesy of Avon Impulse via Edelweiss+***
Ignore the silly cover.I am particularly leery of historical fiction, which is why I’m correspondingly happy when I find a writer who does it well. Cat Sebastian’s rather ambitious effort to place a gay romance in the context of Regency England is a quiet tour de force in literate writing, elegant character-building, and careful attention to detail. This is neither Jane Austen nor William Thackeray, and yet Sebastian maintains a tone that is always convincing and never jarringly anachronistic. The narrative is compelling, and the creation of a convincing 1810s England is extremely well done.“Soldier’s Scoundrel†is the story of Jack Turner, a guttersnipe turned valet turned private investigator of sorts. The lowest of the low in English society, Jack and his sister Sarah have raised themselves up to respectability. She makes dresses for the quality, and he, in his office above her elegant shop, solves intimate personal problems for the gentry, sometimes in ways that might not be strictly legal.Into this world marches Oliver Rivington, younger son of the Earl of Rutland, former captain in the King’s army, an officer in the battle of Waterloo. Concerned over a large amount of money paid to Jack Turner by his sister, Lady Montbray, he accosts Turner as a scoundrel. What Oliver finds instead is that Turner is a far more complicated sort of man than he has ever met, and like him in more ways than he is different.This is well and truly a romance, but it is far more than that. It is a study of class differences and of the complex notion of justice in a world where the cards are all stacked in favor of the upper classes. There is no simple definition of either class or morality that Oliver and Jack can cling to as they try to define their attraction to each other. This is where Sebastian’s writing takes on the complex nuances of Dickens at his best. Even though it is a generation earlier in period setting, there are echoes of “Oliver Twist†all through it. This is not the benign aristocracy of “Downton Abbey;†this is a labyrinth of moral and social difficulty that will challenge the reader as much as the actors in the story. If there is an overarching anachronism to Cat Sebastian’s book, it is this very insistence on moral relativity—a world view that is very much of our own time, and not of the world of Waterloo and regency Mayfair.I well and truly loved this book and the people in it. It didn’t just satisfy my romantic leanings, it taught me something.
Really lovely, I thought. I enjoyed the way Oliver and Jack rubbed each-other the wrong way (when they weren't rubbing each-other the right way). I enjoyed the way Oliver was almost boyish in his straight forward, goal-oriented pursuit of Jack and the way Jack enjoyed it despite himself. I liked that Jack was a bit older than the average romance hero and I liked the close friendships between the sister and her 'companion.'I did think the book a little too long, or at least longer than what seems to be the average for such books. The mystery especially seemed to take forever to come to a head. And, after all Jack's protests about social position, I thought the ending didn't adequately address how they were going to make their HEA work. But the writing was lovely. There was humor and feelz. I'm looking forward to reading more of Sebastian's work.
