About the Author
David E. Ambrose is a Communication Studies lecturer at the T. A. Marryshow Community College in Grenada. Although he was born on mainland Grenada, his mother is originally from Bogles, Carriacou. He is an alumnus of the Grenada Boys’ Secondary School; Principia College, and the University of Phoenix in the United States. Ambrose is the author of the gripping crime thriller, White Spice.

That time in Bogles takes you into the life of Grenadian Daniel as he spends the Easter holidays with his Kayak cousins. D E Ambrose does a wonderful job capturing the vernacular in an easy to understand yet well developed manner. Even to mainland Grenadians it is a history and cultural treasure chest as it captures the customs, activities and every day life that makes Carriacou such a unique place. Well done Mr Ambrose.
Like a guava cheese, boiled down to a morsel of sweet goodness, Ambrose manages, with great skill, to condense within sixty-six pages, a tasty account of Kayak life in the 80s, through his main characters Daniel and Elijah, in That Time in Bogles. Ambrose encapsulates the way of life in Carriacou, with a little sample of every aspect of the culture, through its festivals, music, ceremonies, food, characters- everything of significance gets a little mention: from taytay plums to headless chicken to very brief encounters with Bamboo, the old headmaster and Ras- with his “ imprisoned locksâ€. Ambrose reminds us of the easy pace and simplicity of the good old days- when people used to exchange Sunday meals, and pay respects to ancestral spirits- with libations. He makes me want to create memories of my own Time in Bogles. I could however do without having to “hit the pitâ€!And now I have eaten my guava cheese, I am ready for the rest of Sunday food, which Ambrose left back for later, because I am still hungry and so thirsty for some of Tanty’s gospo juice.A beautiful, atmospheric tale of life on the sister isle of Carriacou. Great work Ambrose!
Any one wanting a sense of what it felt like growing up before the emergence of cellphones, laptops, i pads and the internet should pick up a copy of this book. This book is honest, thought provoking, riveting. The deep traditions of Bogles, Carriacou is exposed before the reader taking us back in time to our own experiences growing up in any part of Grenada. The use of the local vernacular adds more flavor to the book making the reader anxious for more of Daniel's experiences. With the emergence of Facebook, Wats App, Face Time and other social media, the question that begs itself is are we losing those occasions that are near and dear to us that usually bring us together as families? Well done Mr. Ambrose on your publication.
I read this book without ever putting it down and thoroughly enjoyed it. That Time in Bogles is a page turner; no joke. All the treasured memories of growing up, or even living as an adult on the island, come flooding back, and if you weren't lucky enough to actually have had the experience, the author's deft skill at truly descriptive writing paints the pictures and creates the sounds that'll take you there. It's funny, too, and gave me many instances to laugh out loud. It's a Super Read!
