The concept behind Quantum Space is intriguing and is delivered in a manner which, incredibly, sounds plausible enough to suspend disbelief without reliance on techno-babble. Sadly, the spell is broken by undeveloped characters, pacing issues, plastic dialog, and implausible human elements. The protagonist, and especially his "helper", feel like a low quality props who, at times, seem bent on impeding progress toward the urgent situation presented in the first few pages of the book. Ultimately Quantum Space feels like a conceptual draft which would have greatly benefited from a rewrite or two.Lovers of science fiction will be certainly entertained by the clever nods to theoretical physics. Lovers of interesting, believable human characters and drama may feel like skipping entire paragraphs or pages of text to get back to the good parts.
It's been a long time since I just simply enjoyed a read as much as I did this one. It's educational, has a feel good storyline and highly likable good guys who easily (maybe too easily) prevail over the not-so-good guys.Sure, I can generate up a few complaints. The flexibility of the government officials is a good deal more farfetched than the most imaginative element of the main story. The speed of development is reminiscent of a golden age "let's build a rocket ship, chums" story. There are a few social commentary quips which are laughable and out of place in the story as well.Stil, these things are minor and heck, it's all in good fun and good fun it surely is. The afterword gives the author a chance to state what aspects of the book are fact and which are speculation. While that was welcome, the line between what's real and what only may be real wasn't tough for me, a lay reader, to see.There's a lot to be said for a book featuring hard science with highly likable characters and that's what we have here. Add a rousing story and I know for a fact I'm on board for volume 2. This is a complete story lacking any cliffhangers so you aren't trapped into buying more, but I think most who do enjoy this book will be there for the next ones to come.
I am old enough to remember sci fi when it was SCIENCE fiction, launching off from real science. Most of the early writers did this and the result was that science fiction captured the imagination of future scientists, engineers, and other technical professions. I was one of them. Although there are many new titles in sci fi each year, very few of them follow that approach to writing any more.But this one absolutely does.It has a framework of a page-turning adventure story with strong character development using cutting-edge science that is presented effortlessly as a starting basis for what evolves during the adventure. The transition into the extrapolations on real science is not noticeable and does not slow the pace of the story at all. In fact, the pressure driving the main characters to unravel the technology puzzle in a very short time drives the story forward.I haven't been motivated much lately to comment on stories that I have read, but this one is outstanding, both as an adventure story and a well-grounded science fiction story that can motivate a desire to understand science better and maybe even to try it as a profession. Even better is the fact that this is just the first of a series. I am very much looking forward to the next book in the series.
Holy cow. You know, I find it really hard to find interesting science fiction novels to read. When I do finally find one, I'm thrilled. Quantum Space takes me to a place I rarely get to enjoy--far beyond being thrilled. This book is FANT-ABULOUS.I really loved Andy Weir's The Martian because I'm an engineer and the engineering in The Martian is excellent. Well, I'm no particle physicist but the way Mr. Phillips explains it in Quantum Space was completely thrilling. It was understandable. It was elegant. It was flawlessly written. I'm just beside myself having found such an author as Douglas Phillips.I'm very much looking forward to Book 2, Quantum Singularity, and I'll certainly pre-order it as soon as it's available.If you're at all confused about Mr. Phillips short story, Quantum Incident, just get it. It's a very short story that sets the context for Quantum Space. Start with Quantum Incident and you'll be ever more delighted when you read Quantum Space.
Fans of hard Sci-Fi will love Quantum Space! In the tradition of Arthur C. Clarke, Phillips takes the quantum physics from today's news and extends it into the possibilities of the immediate future, with all the complexity and fun of a Dan Brown thriller. It begins with the disappearance of the returning Soyuz space capsule with three astronauts aboard and goes down the rabbit-hole of secret government research into the most basic of basic physics. Who knew that quarks, bosons and string theory could be so much fun? The story is peppered with the real science - and real science locales - to give it a startling authenticity.
