Overall seems like they took old chapters of Kaplan books from 4.0 and assembled them hastily into this publication. The content is fine but the references to tables and page numbers are not updated. For example, in the answers to the chapter quizzes, the pages they tell you to refer to are not correct. There is also a chapter in here that refers to the old building section vignette, which is no longer needed in the ARE 5.0. I was hoping for more updated content in this book that would help with the new format (tips on the case studies, hot spots, drag and drop) but it did not. This is a good overview but will definitely need to use other sources to supplement with my studying.
As everyone else has said, they took the old 4.0 books and rearranged the chapters for the new tests. Literally copied and pasted without revision. How do I know? On the answer page for the practice questions some have explanation others just say "see page ..." when I go to the page that's referenced it's not even the right section. For example one question regarding retaining walls sent me to the chapter on lumber for explanation. They didn't bother to change the reference pages in the answer key to match their new arrangement. This is a damn expensive series of books for them to have phoned it in.
They just reused the old ARE 4.0 material and didn't even update the reference page and diagram numbers! It will say "reference page XXX for more info" but every single one of those references are WRONG. DO NOT BUY THIS. It still has a section on the vignette portion of the exam, which is no longer in the exam at all! Buy the 4.0 books used.
They really mailed it in with this study guide. Just rearranged the old Kaplan books. Didn't even bother to update the references in the book to reflect the new arrangement of information
No need to buy this book. This is completely waste of time and money. Same material from the previous Kaplan 4.0 books, nothing change at all, just moving chapters around. Lots of duplicate chapters between different exam books and even the sample questions are exactly the same as before. Not gear toward the new exam format. Studied it and they were not helpful in preparing the new ARE 5.0 exam.
